Heidi Duckler Dance (HDD) presents act one of the Hour of Hildegard at St. John’s Cathedral, 514 West Adams Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90007 on March 23, 2019 at 5pm.
Hildegard von Bingen, a woman ahead of her time, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, polymath and is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history. Her work spanned the theological, artistic, and scientific fields in a time when women rarely had the opportunity to speak up. The Hour of Hildegard is the first installment of Duckler’s exploration of the work of Hildegard von Bingen. This introductory piece will focus on Hildegard’s work “Physica,” her book on health and nine healing systems which include the medicinal use of plants, elements, trees, stones, fish, birds, animals, reptiles and metals. The work takes place in St. John’s historic Parish Hall where guests are invited to partake in a feast of healthy foods and investigate the healing systems up close.
Choreographed & Directed by Heidi Duckler, the Hour of Hildegard features HDD company dancers Tess Hewlett, Haylee Nichele, Rafael Quintas & Himerria Wortham. Collaborator, Dr. Christopher Gravis, Canon for Music Ministry and Cathedral Arts at St. John’s, will direct live singers from the Ensemble Vocatrix in Hildegard’s original work, and Sarah Belle Reid will play prepared trumpet with a Minimally Invasive Gesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI) device.
This performance is made possible with support from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
