Black Talkies on Parade presents the critically acclaimed 1969 coming of age classic, The Learning Tree. Gordon Parks directed, edited, produced, and composed the music for the film, which is based on his semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. The film stars Kyle Johnson as Newt Winger, a teenager in Cherokee Flats, Kansas during the 1920’s who must face the difficulties of growing up in a town where racism is ever present. The film was recognized as a culturally important film by the Library of Congress and selected for the National Film Registry in 1989.
