Vox Femina – Community Concert April 15

The city’s premier women’s chorus, VOX Femina, presents A Taste of Season 21, a free community concert made possible in part by a Culver City Performing Arts Grant with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment, on Sunday, April 15th at 3pm at the Culver City Presbyterian Church.

The concert includes performances of material from each of the choir’s three season subscription concerts, She Persisted, Heavenly Bodies, and This Land is Your Land. The selected pieces are as diverse as the women who sing in the choir, from the strong social justice message that is an integral part of VOX Femina’s mission to “give women voice”, to the ethereal music of the heavens, and back to the roots of our American musical heritage.

She Persisted, performed in November of 2017, was a sold-out success consisting of songs of resistance and pride. Through song, the choir honored women as varied as Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzei, and tackled difficult issues such as the violent deaths of Philandro Castile and Alton Sterling. The concert honored the countless women who have persisted throughout history.

Heavenly Bodies featured unique and beautiful works by National Medal of Arts winner Morten Lauridsen as well as frequent VOX collaborator and internationally renowned composer Jocelyn Hagen. Songs ranging from a fiery female anthem to the Moon Goddess, Inanna, to the moving celebration of the hushed moments of renewal that the stars watch over at night, all celebrating the beauty of the astral bodies: the sun, the moon, and the stars, and the wonder they inspire.

This Land is Your Land is performed on June 9th at 8pm in the beautiful Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School. This preview will offer the distinct VOX Femina take on the stories and traditions that are the foundation of American folk music. From the hills of Appalachia to the stages in Greenwich Village, the threads of folk music are woven deeply throughout our country. These tales of love, songs of protest, and hymns of praise have traveled thousands of miles through times of hardship, war, and change.
