It might be one of the most charming musicals you’ve not heard of; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a Tony Award winning show that celebrates the agonies of adolescence, and the wonder of wordplay with fresh and candid sweetness. The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Blurred Vision Theater production hits all the right notes, from the facilitators self-important smugness to the contestant’s wild nerves and high hopes. The crazy, ambitious parents – the neglectful parents – the ‘I can’t believe you’d win anything’ parents – are all part of what makes this spelling bee special. The spellers themselves, they know how the game is played, and they discover in the process what is really at stake – and what matters most to them.
The production is crafted with care by Director and Producer Kristen Opstad, and supported by a small selection of horns, woodwinds and drums led by AVPA Music Director Dr. Tony Spano. Only three more nights at the Vets Auditorium. Click the link below for tickets, or buy them at the box office before 7 pm.
