Lodge Bread Gets the Nod for Outstanding Baker from James Beard Awards

The most delicious aroma ever to float down Washington Boulevard has gotten another slice of national recognition. Lodge Bread’s creators Or Amsalam and Alex Phaneuf are listed as semifinalists for the James Beard Awards.

Starting in 2016, Lodge Bread has expanded from it’s original storefront to a space twice that big, and it’s grown into a full restaurant with all kinds of delicious offerings. But don’t leave without a loaf; it’s still the best thing there.

The James Beard Foundation holds an online open call for entries beginning in mid-October of each year. This year, more than 20,000 entries were received, a list which the Restaurant and Chef Committee reviews to determine eligibility and regional representation. Based on the results and eligibility requirements for each award, the committee then produces a nominating ballot that lists the semifinalists in each of the 21 Restaurant and Chef Award categories. The list of semifinalists is then sent to an independent volunteer panel of more than 600 judges from across the country. This panel, which comprises leading regional restaurant critics, food and wine editors, culinary educators, and past James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Award winners, votes on specific award categories to determine the final five nominees in each category.

The 2018 James Beard Awards Gala will take place on Monday, May 7, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The 2018 Media Awards will be held on Friday, April 27, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
