CCAN & CCUSD Need Volunteers to Help with Free Farmers Market

unnamedCulver City Action Network is partnering with the CCUSD Culver Needs committee to help organize and promote the FREE FARMERS MARKET happening at La Ballona Elementary every Wednesday afternoon, 12:45 – 3:15 pm. The program starts next Wednesday, June 14, so we need to gear up quickly. Here are volunteer needs:

Drivers with vans, SUVs, or trucks to pick up the food. Food will be boxed and available for pickup at the Westside Food Bank each Wednesday morning.

More food! Pass the word through our neighborhood groups that folks with plentiful gardens and fruit trees can drop off food donations at the patio area of La Ballona each Wednesday at Noon. Boxed food appreciated.

Adults to staff the tables and supervise student helpers. Volunteers will decide on apportioning each week’s food based on the amount provided and student attendance that day. You might decide to stay the whole time or to work in 2 short shifts when most parents are gathering food. It’s up to you.

If the summer pilot is evaluated as a successful and effective response to the need for healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables among our most vulnerable families, we will have the opportunity to carry the Free Farmers Market into schools next fall. Over 130 children were helped in the Backpacks for Kids program this year, and a high percentage of mixed-status families have stopped renewing or applying for CalFresh (food stamps). So hunger is growing in our community.

If you have time to volunteer any Wednesdays this summer, please let us know. Bring your kids!

To volunteer, please reply to Pat at 323 828-2515 or [email protected]
What a great way to start the summer!
