Common Cause to Discuss Electoral College – Feb. 11

19670697_BG1Join California Common Cause for our next West Los Angeles Member Meeting on Saturday, Feb. 11, featuring Whose Votes Count?, a discussion on the Electoral College with filmmaker, Lisa Elaine Scott.

Every four years, the President is not directly chosen by voters, but rather, by delegates to the Electoral College. Yet, this controversial aspect of our democratic system has led to five times in U.S. history where a presidential candidate has won the White House while losing the popular vote – including most recently with the election of Donald Trump.

Who are the “electors” of the Electoral College and how are they chosen? Why did the constitutional Framers set up this method to elect presidents? Does the Electoral College still adequately serve our democracy today, or is there a better system?

Lisa will also be screening her new short film, Outdated Democracy: A 21st Century Civics Lesson.

Event is free and open to the public.
