13770432_10105788710005566_5139004739318336281_nAbby Bergman has completed her 2o plus mile swim from Catalina Island to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in eleven hours and eleven minutes.  She began last night on Catalina at 11:30 pm and arrived this morning near the Terranea Resort. The Smith College student who grew up in Culver City has just embarked on a long distance swim career with this first adventure.

The conditions were near-perfect; calm ocean, and clear sky. She was in outstanding form throughout, keeping a strong pace and a straight route.  Cheered on by both of her moms, Kim and Natalie Bergman, Abby was also supported in the water by Paige Christie       (the distance swimmer can ask for someone in the water with her for up to an hour at a time) and her cousin Madeline Gibson in the accompanying kayak. Christie is also a student at Smith, and a highly accomplished swimmer as well.

Bergman turned in an incredible performance on her first long distance swim. She will be the support swimmer for her Smith swim team sister Eliza Cummings on a Plymouth to Provincetown ocean swim on August 6.
