Artists & Contracts @ USVAA – April 13

how-to-become-an-artistThe world is made of contracts, and if you are an artist, negotiation may not be your strong suit. Scott Burroughs and Matthew DiNicola of Doniger Burroughs will cover a broad overview of contractual law inlacing the significance of having a written agreement and the major deal points to be included in any contract.

Throughout the program, Matthew and Scott will emphasize how artists can protect themselves by entering into a contract, how to position themselves throughout the negotiation of a contract and by giving them the tools to recognize when to walk away from a potentially bad deal. A key focus will be the protection of artist’s content by identifying the different ways a contract can be used to transfer or retain the rights in artist’s work. Finally, the program will look at the boilerplate provisions typically found at the end of every contract that no one ever reads and explain why they should never be ignored.
