b43c20c4-0945-452e-92ac-0953b620f64dThomas Small has received the endorsements of Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters and Vote the Bike LA in his bid for a seat on the Culver City City Council. The election will take place Tuesday, April 12.

“These important organizations and their leaders are stewards of our precious environment,” Thomas Small said. “I am grateful for their confidence in me.”

Thomas Small is an environmental sustainability expert. His expertise also includes architecture, urban and sustainable design, planning, conscientious development and historic preservation. He is an architectural writer and consultant, a Culver City Cultural Affairs Commissioner, and a Yale graduate. He recently taught a course in Sustainability for Organizational Change at UCLA Extension.

In announcing its endorsement, the Sierra Club stated: “Thomas Small has a strong record of environmental accomplishment and an impressive perspective on steps Culver City can take to improve the environment. We are confident that he is one of the candidates most capable of protecting and preserving Culver City’s environmental resources.”

The League of Conservation Voters wrote: “The LA League of Conservation Voters is proud to endorse Mr. Small because of his passion for sustainable urban design, linked with smart transportation. Thomas will be a strong environmental leader on the Culver City Council, fighting for a strong sustainable future for the city.”

Bike the Vote LA, whose members focus on active transportation and safe streets, said of the candidate: “We give Thomas Small an A rating because he is a frequent bike-commuter who shows an exceptional grasp of the concepts of – and need for – livable streets. He is a superb candidate with a vision to improve livability and increase mobility options in Culver City.”

In seeking the endorsement of the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, and Bike the Vote L.A., Thomas Small shared his plan for protecting the environment. Now he is taking his plan to the residents.

“Fracking, oil drilling and other extraction processes are dirty, harmful and dangerous,” Thomas Small said. “We must protect the health of our residents by enacting strong regulations to limit them.

“Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, will enable us to secure a sustainable and resilient energy future for Culver City. I will be a champion for renewable energy sources.

“La Ballona Creek could be a gem. It could and should provide a healthy habitat for fish and plants. But that takes clean water. I will prioritize the transformation of Ballona Creek. I will work at the regional level to ensure that the water is clean before it enters the creek. Here in Culver City I will lead us toward making Ballona Creek a (modestly) landscaped recreational waterway that we will use and enjoy as never before.

“Achieving environmental sustainability throughout our city is an exciting goal—and imperative. But the city can’t do it alone. I will work collaboratively with the school district to create a joint sustainability master plan.

“Our students, even the youngest of them, are already making environmental decisions. Whether by collaborating with the schools or reaching out directly to families, I will encourage students and families to conserve, to become stewards of the earth.”
