LOCALmotion – Jozelle Smith

-1If you’re reading this on Monday, July 14 then TONIGHT is the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club’s July meeting, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Veterans’ Memorial Building. The program is “Valley of Rubies” by Gerard Pope, so appropriate for July birthday celebrants whose birthstone just happens to be a ruby! In addition to hearing about Gerard’s recent trip to Burma’s mountainous Mogok area, aka “Valley of Rubies,” you’ll see samples of the gems and hear a report on the Club’s Fiesta of Gems, held at the end of June. For additional information be sure to visit www.culvercityrocks.org.

Have you ever been to Café-Club Fais Do-Do, at 5253 W. Adams Blvd, just a stone’s throw from our thriving East Culver City Arts District? They’re going to be updating their schedule in the upcoming months with daily and nightly events in the worlds of music, theatre, comedy, cuisine and other enticements, including the hiring of a new Chef (which means a new menu) and a new talent-booker, so new acts (and old favorites) are forthcoming. There will be regularly scheduled nights of the best in jazz, blues, swing, rock, world-beat, stand-up, improv, burlesque, vaudeville, theater and more. Stay in tune by visiting www.faisdodo.com

We’re hoping it’s not too late to sign up, but if you’ve always had a hankering to visit the Italian Lakes District (featuring Vicenza, Venice, Verona, Garda and Milan) then email [email protected]. The Culver City Chamber of Commerce is making the opportunity available for members and non members to spend nine days, seven nights including hotels, meals, day trips and airfare from Los Angeles from $2,999 per person. The trip takes place November 2-10, and one information session for those registered has already been held.

Don’t forget the trip down memory lane (we’re saying that tongue-in-cheek) to the early 1950’s for Culver City High School alums this Wednesday, July 16, 2014, 7:00 p.m.in the Veterans Memorial Building’s Rotunda Room. All members of the Culver City Historical Society and the public are welcome to enjoy this free program and students are encouraged to attend. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. For questions, please call the Society at (310) 253-6941 or visit the Society website at www.CulverCityHistoricalSociety.org.

Get Well Wishes go out this week to Culver City Exchange Club members Bill Fecho, who has been under the weather lately; Dick Brundo, who fell and chipped a bone in his spine; and to Bob Clarke, and Ali Safai. (NOTE: Congratulations go out to Exchange Club members all, who are tired but happy after a great 4th of July Fireworks Show at West Los Angeles College!)

It’s that time again – the third Saturday of the month is this Saturday, July 19 and that means it’s time for the Culver City “Walk With A Doc,” 9:00 a.m. at Vet’s Park near the tennis courts. Dr. Nancy L. Sicotte will discuss the positive cognitive effect of exercise and then lead the group on a neighborhood walk. (Dr. Sicotte is the director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neurology Residency Programs in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is a Professor in Residence, Department of Neurology, at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA.) Warm-up and stretching with Brandon Webb, Healthy Lifestyles Counselor, Culver Palms YMCA, precedes the walk at 8:40 a.m. Our mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. This FREE event occurs monthly on the third Saturday. For more information visit meetup.com/Culver-City-Walk-With-a-Doc-Meetup/, www.docwalk.org.
