Linwood E. Howe Elementary School’s PTA will focus on health with a schoolwide sponsored Walk-a-Thon on Friday, February 28.
“PTA members wanted to have a fundraiser where 100% of funds raised stay within the school and those funds focus on continuing to promote health and wellness for our students,” said PTA President Yvonne McLauchlan.
The Walk-a-Thon will cap off February’s Heart Health Awareness Month at Lin Howe and simultaneously begin a six-week walking program, thanks to a $2,000 grant received from the California State PTA.
First-grade parent Kelly Kent Marin applied for the grant, which will provide a pedometer for every child in the school to be given out on the day of the Walk-a-Thon. Children who log and meet the daily amount of recommended steps will be recognized at school assembly and will receive a prize.
This program will supplement Lin Howe’s successful Walking School Bus program, the Hiking Vikings. Hiking Vikings meet every Friday morning, and the children walk to school together with adult volunteers.
