Oops! There’s been a change of venue for the Culver City Garden Club August meeting: This coming Tuesday, August 6, the meeting will take place at the group’s old stomping grounds – after an absence of almost two years —the Uruapan Room at the Veterans’ Memorial Complex, 4117 Overland Avenue. This is a special event, as they’ll be holding their annual summer potluck as well as presenting awards for the entries that wowed everyone at their 60th Annual Garden Show last June. Come check out the winners – and you’ll be caught up by the enthusiasm of these avid gardeners. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7:00 p.m. For more information visit www.culvercitygardenclub.org. Visitors are welcome, but remember – this particular meeting is a potluck!

In addition to the mind-boggling number of events and classes that the Culver City Senior Center offers, now there’s even more! A new class on Chinese Watercolor Painting starts this Wednesday, August 7 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. You will begin by painting petals, bamboo, branches, flowers, birds and the natural elements that honor this old Eastern tradition. The fee is just $6.00 for the two hour class, but you’ll need to bring watercolor paper/pad 8”x10” or larger; watercolor set; No. 12 (or larger) brush; a No. 2 detail Chinese watercolor brush; and a jar or plastic container and you’re ready to roll! Yet another new class is Chair Yoga (on Mondays). You can perform most yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation from a chair! Who knew?? (Editor’s Note – I knew, actually…) Chair Yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga you can do without going down to the ground. This class (the second taught at the Center by Shanna Hughes) starts this Monday, August 5, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on the patio and the fee is $4.00 per class (Shanna also teaches this class on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.). Interested in finding out more about what’s available at the Senior Center? Stop by 4095 Overland Avenue (corner Culver Blvd. and Overland Ave.) or call the Center at (310) 253-6700.

Members of the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club will be celebrating the success of this year’s show at next week’s (Monday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m.) meeting. The program will feature Janie Duncan, president of the Monrovia Rockhounds Club presenting “A History of Beads,” taking members back in time with actual samples of beads dating back to Ostrich shell beads from 9500 BC, an Egyptian bead from a burial tomb during the time of the pyramids, ancient Sumerian stone beads circa 3000 BC, African slave trade beads, Aztec and Mayan beads, and – well, you get the picture. There will also be beads for sale. The meeting takes place in the Multi-Purpose Room in the Veterans Memorial Building (enter from the rear door). Guests are always welcome – for additional information, go to www.culvercityrocks.org.
