Ah, bribery by any other name…Grace Lutheran Church is hosting an All Day Work Day on Saturday, September 29 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) and for digging new sprinkler system trenches, painting, gardening or general clean up, workers get a yummy free lunch! Participants’ help means that an estimated $1000 work project will end up actually costing the church less than $300. RSVP to volunteer: (310)837-6540.
Yes, they really did fish! Culver City Rotary Club president Keith Jones reported that the club’s annual Fishing Trip was a great success and he thanked Rotarian Chris King for organizing the event. According to Reciprocator Editor Dannie Cavanaugh “…Master Fisherman Bill Gardner caught the biggest fish and was recognized for $20 for this feat. Bill mentioned that he and Rob Barber caught around 250 fish on this trip – aren’t there limits on catching that many in four days? While he was handing out Fishing Trip Related Fines, the Keith also hit Chris King for $30 for leaving town early on Sunday, thus getting out of clean up duty. Sounds like a bargain to me.”
You might want to think twice about using the eastern portion of Venice Blvd. from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. this coming week, specifically around cross streets Robertson/Ellis/Ivy. Watch for electronic message boards on Venice. Pedestrian and local business access won’t be affected – but probably slowed down quite a bit while hole drilling to determine the depth of underground utilities takes place.
In conjunction with the Culver-Palms Family YMCA’s observance of October as Disability Awareness Month “Yoga for MS” (those with multiple sclerosis) now has a new home – at the YMCA, 4500 Sepulveda Blvd. Yoga for MS consists of very gentle movement and breathing techniques to improve flexibility and strength, increase energy and reduce stress. Not limited to persons with MS, this class is also appropriate for individuals with limited mobility, and those seeking a softer, adaptive yoga practice (plan to bring a mat). The Culver/Palms YMCA is offering a week-long pass in October so folks can try out some of its Water Movement and Active Adults Classes that are appropriate for individuals with limited mobility and those seeking a more gentle exercise routine. To find out more opportunities to keep fit though disabled call (310) 390-3604 or visit the Y.
Congratulations to the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club – Patty Valdovinos, El Rincon Elementary School 4th Grade teacher, formally thanked the board for the money the club has allocated for the second year to teach children about rocks and minerals. Three avid rockhound members have taken in samples of rocks for the kids to heft, hold and examine – visual and tactile learning tools that books just can’t match. Obviously, they’ve been invited to come back and conduct show-and-tell for the fourth grade again this year! For more information on this busy club (they just welcomed new members Avas Baskauskas and Colin Gibson and welcomed back Liz Leshin) visit www.culvercityrocks.org.
He’s made it so big-time! Victor Abascal’s Vines on the Marycrest is taking advantage of the Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend by hosting their first dinner and concert at the new VOTM. They’ll have a farm-to-table dinner under the stars catered by Chef Alex Martin of Crush Catering and then a special treat: Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric will perform in their intimate room. (These two have a long history in music individually and now play together as Eric & Amy.) Per Victor, “We feel privileged and honored to have them join us at the table and then play for us! Seats are limited to this event so make your reservation soon.” Victor Abascal, who grew up in Culver City and planted his first vines on the hillside by Marycrest Manor, can be reached at [email protected]
