Culver City Public Theater – More Summer Fun

Culver City Public Theatre (CCPT) presents its 13th season of free theater in Carlson Park for families and theatre fans of all ages. All shows are open to the public for free, though donations are accepted. We recommend that patrons do not park in front of neighborhood residences, and bring their own blankets or chairs for lawn seating.

The season opens July 16th at noon, with world premiere BIG BAD WOLF TALES, written and directed by 5-year CCPT veteran Blake Anthony Edwards. This is Mr. Edward’s debut as a writer for our Children’s Popcorn Theatre; our seasonal show specifically for young audiences. You may recognize Mr. Edwards from his roles in CCPT productions KING MIDAS, THE GOOD DOCTOR, SLUE-FOOT SUE AND PECOS BILL, and SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER, or outside productions of Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Good Smoke, and In on It, for which he received an LA Weekly award nomination. BIG BAD WOLF TALES is a hilarious and imaginative re-telling of three classic wolf stories. Our hungry, down-on-his-luck anti-hero encounters the Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Boy Who Cried Wolf. With Eric Pierce as Big Bad Wolf, Josh Gren as Boy/Peter Pig/ Doc, Donna Donnelly as Mother/Mama Pig/Grandma, Victor Holstein as Father/Paulie Pig/Hunter, and Chase McKenna as Priscilla Pig/Little Red Riding Hood. Co-produced by Laura Boccaletti and Heidi Dotson, with costumes by Marcy Hiratzka, set by Robert Ballo, and sound design by Sylvia Monge.

CCPT’s first main stage show of 2011 is AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, opening July 16th at 2pm. Mike Peebler returns to direct following his successful CCPT debut with THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (NEW JERSEY). No stranger to outdoor productions, he has worked extensively with Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, and has appeared on television and in films including Medium, NUMB3RS, Las Vegas, Scrubs, and Valkyrie. He directs this action packed adventure complete with stampeding elephants, raging typhoons, runaway trains, and unabashedly high-spirited fun. Fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg, with his loyal manservant, Passepartout, set off to circumnavigate the globe in a mere 80 days. Tenaciously pursued by Detective Fix, a lawman who mistakes Fogg for a bank robber, the tension builds as danger, romance and hilarious surprises abound in this whirlwind, family fare. With Christine Breihan as Actor 4, Jeena Yi as Actor 1, Marc Fellnererez as Actor 3, Ron Geren as Actor 5, and James Clark as Actor 2. Costumes by Laurie Peebler, set by Robert Ballo, sound design by Mike Peebler, and stage managed by Misty Sutherland.

Rounding out the 2011 season is literary classic LITTLE WOMEN, opening August 6th at 2pm. Directed by 8-year CCPT veteran, and company president, Heidi Dotson who wrote our past four Children’s Popcorn Theatre shows, KING MIDAS, SLUE-FOOT SUE AND PECOS BILL, AUNT FONDEEN AND THE LOST DUTCHMAN GOLDMINE, and THE TRUE STORY OF JACK AND THE BEANSTALK. Ms. Dotson has acted and directed with CCPT numerous times, and has an extensive background in music theatre. She has performed with San Gabriel Valley Music Theater, The Redlands Bowl, Redlands Theatre Festival, Rio Hondo College, and Riverside Civic Light Opera. LITTLE WOMEN is the tale of the March family set in the mid 1800s. Following the coming of age of four sisters during the Civil War as they navigate love, hardship, and loss. With Skip Pipo as Mr. March, Karen Richter as Mrs. March, Stephanie Pinnock as Meg, Heather Roberts as Jo, Gabi Nail as Beth, Laetitia Leon as Amy, Ria Parody Erlich as Aunt March, Leon Cohen as Mr. Laurence, Jason Rector as Laurie, Victor Holstein as Professor Bhaer, Max Flisi as John Brooke, and Judy Rosenfeld as Hannah Mullett.
