The Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) presents its annual Spring Music Concert on Tuesday, June 1, at 7pm in the Robert Frost Auditorium, 4401 Elenda Street. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 per person. The year-end concert celebrates the many achievements by the program’s ensembles and individual students.

The Culver City High School Concert Band, directed by Dr. Tony Spano, will perform repertoire that was recently awarded a rating of “Excellent” at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) festival at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore on April 8. The Concert Band also won a rating of “Superior” for their sight-reading session.

The AVPA Chamber Singers, directed by Lisa Michel, are performing selections from their recent participation in the Los Angeles Master Chorale High School Choir Festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall on April 16. “It was one of the greatest experiences of my time in high school. It was amazing to work with such world-renowned conductors,” said Avionne Thomas, senior and Chamber Singers president.

Also included on the program are the following AVPA music ensembles: String Ensemble, directed by Dr. Tania Flesicher; Percussion Ensemble, directed by Matt North; Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Tony Spano; and Jazz Combo, coached by Eric Patterson.

AVPA is fortunate to have professional musicians working with these ensembles. The String Ensemble has also included advanced musicians from Culver City Middle School, giving them an opportunity to work with the high school students on more challenging repertoire.

Individual students will also be featured, both as soloists and in chamber ensembles, as well as each senior whose final concert is a culmination of up to four years of dedication and commitment to the music program. “It’s always joyful and sad to bid farewell to students who have worked so hard while in our program, but we know they will go on to do great things,” said Dr. Spano.

To honor the many awards won by our students, 35 music students were recognized for their various achievements at the May 11 Culver City Board of Education meeting.

While this is our final music event of the year, each AVPA ensemble is also performing at the AVPA annual benefit, Java Gala II, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on June 12.
