Teofilo Ruiz was just a teenager when the Cuban Revolution began. He joined the uprising against Fulgencio Batista, the dictator who had ruled the island for years.
Then he broke with Fidel Castro, who replaced him. Because of this he was imprisoned, and eventually left the country.
He has spent his life since as a historian, teaching at UCLA and earning the National Humanities Medal for his work on medieval and early modern Spain. This Saturday, August 8, at 2 p.m., he sets that work aside and tells his own story.
Revolutions are usually studied by historians from a distance. This one will be described by a historian who lived through it.
