West Basin Municipal Water District is hosting two public meetings for community members to attend and learn more about the draft environmental impact report (EIR) for the potential ocean water desalination facility in El Segundo, Calif.
Both public meetings are scheduled in the City of El Segundo, due to its proximity to the proposed project site, on the following dates and times:

PUBLIC COMMENT
The public review and comment period for the draft EIR started on March 27 and continues through May 25, 2018 at 5 p.m. The report is available online at www.westbasin.org/desal and the general public is encouraged to review the findings and provide insights. A “Citizen’s Guide” summarizing the report and review process is also available online. Comments on the draft EIR may be submitted at a meeting, via mail or hand-delivery to the West Basin Municipal Water District office (17140 S. Avalon Blvd., Carson, CA 90746), via e-mail at [email protected],or via an online comment form.
ABOUT THE DRAFT EIR
As a coastal water supply agency, West Basin is investigating the possibility of implementing an Ocean Water Desalination Project that would provide a local, potable water source to its already diverse water supply portfolio of imported water, recycled water, desalted groundwater and conservation. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requires that a public agency prepare an EIR when considering a project that may result in significant environmental impacts. A summary of these impacts is included in the “Citizen’s Guide.”
NEXT STEPS FOLLOWING PUBLIC REVIEW
Following the close of the public review and comment period, West Basin will respond to all comments submitted in regards to the draft EIR. Once responses have been compiled, a final EIR will be released. The West Basin Board of Directors will then schedule a public hearing to consider certifying the EIR based upon the final report’s completeness.
Certification of the final EIR does not support or reject the proposed project; it is confirmation that the EIR informs the community and the Board of Directors of the potential environmental impacts that may be expected and has been prepared in compliance with CEQA.
