CCUSD School Board Approves Resolution on Gun Violence Prevention

At the CCUSD Board of Education meeting on May 28, 2024, the board passed a resolution on Gun Violence Prevention, emphasizing safe storage and responsible ownership. Highlighting the often overlooked issue of suicide, the availability of a gun is often the fatal factor. According to national statistics, over 80% of teenagers who attempt suicide with a gun use a weapon used a weapon that belonged to someone in their home. Across the country, an estimated 75% of school shootings are committed by boys with access to unsecured firearms in the home.

According to a press release from the district, “In Item 15.1, the Board of Governors unanimously approved Resolution No.40/2023-2024, Gun Violence Prevention. Guns are now the leading cause of death for children in America. This resolution serves as a declaration of the Culver City Unified School District’s commitment to keep students safe from gun violence and to help prevent gun violence in our schools, homes, and communities.”

Safely locking up and/or disabling firearms when they are not in use has been shown to be the most effective gun safety measure used by cities and states.
