Culver City Unified School District has crowned a new Spelling Bee winner for 2024! From La Ballona Elementary School, fifth-grader Sakina Shaiq takes top honors.
The annual district Spelling Bee was held at the Robert Frost Auditorium on Feb. 21, 2024, and students from all elementary schools competed.
Shaiq stood tall and confidently spelled the word S-H-E-A-V-E-S to take home the 17th Annual Culver City Unified School District Spelling Bee title. She finished atop 23 other spellers – four students from each of the district’s five elementary schools and Culver City Middle School competed.
Shaiq also took home a first-place trophy and a cash prize courtesy of the Culver City Education Foundation, which sponsored the event. She will advance to the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee, which will be held on March 24 at Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor St., in Alhambra. The winner of that competition will advance to the statewide spelling bee in Sonoma in May.
The Culver City Education Foundation also presented trophies and cash prizes to second-place finisher Arianna DeCicco of El Rincon Elementary School and third-place finisher William Boardman of Linwood E Howe Elementary School.
In addition, each of the 24 participants received a certificate of commendation signed by the District’s superintendent congratulating him or her on reaching the Spelling Bee finals.
