An original highly theatrical play-with-music that reimagines Greek tragedy through an early Californian lens, exploring revenge, cycles of trauma, and women’s experience in the “old west.” Set against the backdrop of late 1800s California when the railroad was on the verge of reaching the west, COWBOY ELEKTRA brings the Elektra story into the Palace Saloon as Nessie, Elektra, and their Herdies grapple with the changing landscape of Los Angeles. Elektra must confront her rage toward her mother, whom she blames for her father’s death, and her desire to find her own freedom beyond the walls of the saloon. This performance will feature a talk back with the artists after the reading.
This is a reading of a play-in-progress followed by a talk back with the artists. The reading contains mature themes and is not recommended for children.
This performance is made possible in part by the City of Culver City and its Cultural Affairs Commission, with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment and the Culver City Arts Foundation. Play was originally commissioned by the Getty Villa.
