Wende Museum – Political Mandate of the Arts

This coming Wednesday, June 28 at 4:15pm PT, the Wende Museum’s  student council interviews the brilliant interdisciplinary artist Cauleen Smith in the series The Political Mandate of the Arts. Smith specializes in film, installation, and object art questioning traditional conceptions of image and language and opening up new perspectives. Her artwork has been shown at The Whitney Museum of American Art, MassMoCA, and LACMA, among many others, and she has received numerous awards, including the 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship and the inaugural Ellsworth Kelly Award in 2016. Currently, Smith is a faculty member at the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture in Los Angeles. The students will ask her about making art in a social context and the manyfold connections between past, present, and future in her work.
