Suspect in Attack on Homeless Man Arrested

On October 5th, 2022, at 5:30 AM, Culver City Police Officers responded to a call for service at the Shell Gas Station, located at 3801 Sepulveda Blvd., regarding a male that was bleeding profusely from a head wound. The investigation revealed that the victim was sleeping in his tent at a nearby encampment when two suspects walked in, pepper sprayed him, and then struck him in the head with a hammer. The suspects took the victim’s property and fled the area in an unknown direction. The victim was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition for several days.

Culver City Police Detectives conducted a thorough investigation and identified a suspect who had an extensive arrest history. Culver City Police Detectives presented the information from their investigation to a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, who granted an arrest warrant for the suspect, as well as a search warrant for the Culver City motel room where he was believed to be currently residing.

On October 7th, Culver City Police Detectives served search and arrest warrants at the suspect’s known location in Culver City.

The suspect, 32-year-old Anthony Paul Yanez, was taken into custody without incident for robbery and aggravated assault. This case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration on October 10th, resulting in one felony criminal filing of assault with a deadly weapon.
