The Culver City Arts Foundation, which supports the arts and culture in Culver City, announced a successful second round of the Arts Resiliency Fund. As is being asked of everyone to counter the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping sprees, Culver Arts is getting into the spirit of #GivingTuesday by awarding micro-grants of up to $1,000 each to 13 local artists, totaling over $10,000.
In response to the economic hardships many creative individuals and organizations are currently facing, the Arts Resiliency Fund provides microgrants to artists to pay for utilities and other basic expenses. Despite many aspects of life seemingly returning to “normal”, most artists and the arts will be the last to recover, especially economically.
Grantees include a composer whose work as a performing violinist disappeared dance instructors who could no longer offer studio classes, a filmmaker who has struggled to find clients and work, visual artists who were unable to showcase their work, and a textile artist who had to shutter workshops, among others.
By providing these much needed funds, Culver Arts supports artists to maintain focus on their creative endeavours and imagine new possibilities through their artwork. One grantee said, “Life is too short to not be doing what you love! One of my major goals for 2022 is to launch a larger collection, based off of an idea I had at the start of the pandemic. Being in a more financially stable spot would allow me to dedicate time to these original artworks and maybe host an art show here in Culver City next year. I have big dreams!”
“Art and artists are at the core of our community here in Culver City and with these grants, Culver Arts has been able to help our artists remain resilient despite the challenges faced over the last year and a half, ” said Jim Clarke, Culver Arts Chair. “We’re pleased to be able to continue providing grants through this fund to those who need it the most. We hope they continue to stay in Culver City and thrive!”
The Foundation had previously provided almost $10,000 during the Fund’s first round in May. With a goal to quickly raise $100,000 for the Arts Resiliency Fund, the Foundation is also hoping to open up $5,000 grants to non-profit arts organizations in the community.
