Officer Involved Shooting on Mentone – Man Suspected of Stabbing His Sister Killed While Charging at Police

The Culver City Police Department responded to an incident  on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at approximately 1:50 p.m., on the 4100 block of Mentone Avenue, Culver City. The call was regarding domestic incident between a brother and sister. As the officers were responding, they received an update to respond to the 4100 Block of Mentone Avenue, Culver City, regarding a male chasing a female with a large knife.

Just before 2 p.m., police got a 911 call about a domestic dispute between a brother and sister, who are ages 30 and 27 respectively, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. It was initially reported at an apartment complex along Culver Boulevard.

But just as officers were responding to the scene, they got another call saying to respond to a neighborhood in the 4100 block of Mentone Avenue instead. There, a man was chasing a woman while armed with a knife, officials said.

One witness described the woman running down the street, covered in blood, while screaming, “My brother is trying to kill me.” It was the same pair of siblings reported to be in a dispute at the Culver Boulevard apartment complex.

Once officers arrived, they contacted the man, who then charged officers armed with the knife, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound to his body. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounce dead.

The victim, a female, 27 years old, suffered multiple stab wounds to her upper body. She was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. She is expected to survive her injuries.

A large kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.

No civilians or officers were injured.

The investigation is still ongoing.
