Everybody’s catching Academy Awards fever: the Culver City Rotary Club is having an “Oscar Pool,” and, according to Reciprocator editor Phil Tangalakis, it’s “…a fund raiser that will be both fun and timely. Pick the Oscar Award winners and benefit the club at the same time.” Members can contact Carmela Raak to receive a ballot or pick one up at this week’s meeting. The cost is $10 to enter.

Here’s some news from the Culver City Exchange Club: The 4th of July Fireworks sponsored by the club will be held at West Los Angeles College this year! A committee comprised of John Cohn, Dr. Bob Montgomery, and Jeff Gillette will be responsible for finding the answers to all of the questions that have been raised about the logistics of the show at this new location. A physical walk- through will be held at WLAC this coming Thursday, Feb 27th by the team, along with a representative from Pyrospectaculars and the Facilities Manager from WLAC. We’ll keep you posted!

The Culver City Education Foundation proudly announces that the Sony Pictures Entertainment Teacher of the Year honor goes to Chair of the Culver City High School math department and coach for the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Team, Jerod Dien. Jerod received a standing ovation from his colleagues when he received this award, and students in the library cheered when they heard the news. A great honor for an outstanding – and popular – guy! The Culver City Rotary Club Classified Employee of the Year for 2014 is Virginia Reynosa. (Virginia has been cooking for the children in the CCUSD Office of Child Development Program for 37 years, so she’s super- appreciated too.) Named as See’s Candy Volunteers of the year from the Office of Child Development: Ann Chen; El Marino: Olivia van de Weteringe Buys; El Rincon: Lezlie Brazil; Farragut: Christie Ramsey & Angela Penchansky; La Ballona: Catalina Pop; Linwood E. Howe: Yvonne McLauchlan; Culver City Middle School: Amy Shimoda; Culver City High School: Lloyd Dixon; and Culver Park: Brendan Constantine. They will all be honored at CCEF’s Tribute to the Stars fundraising gala on Saturday, May 3, 2014. It promises to be an evening of fine food, great music, and dancing under the stars on Sony’s Main Street, all in support of CCUSD students.

Have out of town visitors and trying to figure out how to entertain them? Don’t forget that “Jeopardy” and (in town for the next week or two) “Wheel of Fortune” are taped right here on the Sony lot, and tickets are free. To submit a request for tickets, go to www.tvtix.com/schedule, and see what you can come up with. Your guests will be so impressed!

Like many folks we know, we love our Culver City Farmers’ Market, but Tuesdays come and go and all of a sudden it’s been months since we visited. Our Market is perfectly located on (“the world’s shortest”) Main Street between Washington and Venice, and takes place on Tuesdays between 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. The mix of fresh and prepared foods, flowers, and other vendors is terrific, and the adjacent restaurants can’t be beat when it comes time to relax after shopping. See you there this Tuesday?
