Music to our ears – that’s the duo of Dean & Richard, playing Friday and Saturday nights starting around 8:00 p.m. at good old Dear John’s, 11208 Culver Blvd. Country? Rock & Roll? A romantic ballad? Repartee with the diners and bar patrons? They’ve got it all – brass, keyboard, plus, plus – the energy these guys radiate is contagious. And if for some reason they don’t play “Ring of Fire” – ask for it!
The Culver-Palms Family YMCA and Westchester Family YMCAs will jointly host Healthy Kids Day 2012 next Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Center Court at Westfield Culver City. Healthy Kids Day is free, and this year’s theme “Jump into Summer” will offer kids the opportunity to do more than that right in the middle of the Mall. There’ll be a rock-climbing wall, garden planting lessons, a mural creation using colors made from vegetables, basketball, an exercise-loaded scavenger hunt, music, prizes and healthy snacks. Health reps from a podiatry clinic and children’s dentist and others will also be on hand. Need ideas on how to keep your kids healthy and active this summer? Have a ball at Healthy Kids Day. For more information, contact Jerry Morrow at (213)639-7520.
Culver City Garden Club members are excited to be able to visit Susan Gottlieb’s unique garden (she and husband own The G2 Gallery in Venice) at their Beverly Hills home on April 25. Her one-acre garden is certified as a “Backyard Wildlife Habitat” by the National Wildlife Fund and was one of the first in the Southland to convert to native plantings. It’s still “Earth Month,” and to round it out you might enjoy the Green Space Workshop this Saturday, April 28 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. in the Rotunda Room of the Veterans’ Memorial Building. Anyone who uses Culver City’s parks, paths and open spaces will enjoy learning more about these spaces and sharing ideas for improvement and increasing opportunities for passive recreation or wellness activities. The same workshop will take place on Wednesday, May 9, 7:00-8:30 p.m. to gather as many ideas as possible. At a subsequent meeting in Fall 2012 preliminary designs will be presented for possible people- and eco-friendly improvements. For updates, go to www.ballonacreek.org.
