This weekend is your last chance to see two exhibitions at the Wende: Enrique Martínez Celaya: The Sextant and Anton Roland Laub: Mobile Churches in Ceausescu’s Bucharest both close this Sunday, October 11, 2026
The Sextant is a sugarcoated recreation of the modernist house the artist’s father built in a Cuban coastal village between 1957 and 1963, years that took in the Cuban Revolution, the Missile Crisis, and the U.S. embargo. The installation asks what home and memory mean once the dreams of an era have faded.
In the 1980s Ceausescu’s government tore down about a third of historic Bucharest. Seven churches were lifted onto rails, moved, and hidden behind housing blocks. Mobile Churches pairs Anton Roland Laub’s recent photographs of them with archival material in the first U.S. showing of the series, guest-curated by Sonia Voss.
The galleries then close for installation and reopen Saturday, November 7 with Competing Cosmologies: Interpreting the Sky.
