The silver hair, the backdrop with the cogs and gears, and even the insignia black turtleneck are all elements of “Two Gentlebots of Verona” that let you know this Shakespeare production is located firmly in the 21st Century. Taking a classic and giving it a fresh twist is what the Actors’ Gang does so well for their Summer Shakespeare, and this year, better than ever.
If you can bring small children with you, they are the prime audience, but viewers of any age will laugh out loud at the bouncy buffoonery and rewired language that stays true to the original plot. Good comedy (and romance) has misunderstandings, competitive interests, and of course, a happy ending. The silly dance numbers are all there, choreographed by Kayla Blake, with gleeful ‘robots’ all over the grass. There are bubbles blowing in the wind, shouting required from audience and as ever, popsicles to cool you off after the show.
Created by the enormously talented Adam Jeffries and Rynn Vogel, who collectively wrote, directed, designed costumes and made props, built sets, and even understudied the actors, no amount of applause is too much. This funny, charming annual event could not exist without them.
