In the June primary election there were several major State and County offices where the Culver City Democratic Club did not offer endorsement. The club’s bylaws require 60% for endorsement, and by their own admission, “That’s a pretty high bar.”
Now, heading towards the November general election, only the top two candidates remain for each office, the club opted to revisit the races that had gone unendorsed in June.
Members voted using the Election Buddy online system, set to the maximum privacy options for a completely secret ballot.
There were five contests where one Democrat and one Republican made the top two. In each of these, members overwhelmingly united behind the Democrat rather than declining to make an endorsement.
Xavier Becerra for Governor: 92%
Fiona Ma for Lieutenant Governor: 88%
Richard Barrera for State Superintendent of Public Instruction: 86%
Eleni Kounalakis for State Treasurer: 94%
Robert Luna for LA County Sheriff: 80%
For State Insurance Commissioner, two Democrats made the runoff. The club chose to endorse Jane Kim (65%) over Ben Allen (33%).
Only members of the club can vote, but all are welcome at the meetings.
