It was the most notable Ballona Creek Clean Up of the year; 95 volunteers pulled 500 pounds of trash out of the creek and the surrounding landscape.
As part of Coastal Clean-Up Day, Ballona Creek Renaissance has sponsored a creek clean up on September 20 for more than 20 years. The location just behind the Culver City Julian Dixon Library where the gate opens to the bike path has been headquarters for the volunteer efforts.
BCR President Deb Gregory noted it was a huge turnout. “Ninety-five volunteers! And a round of applause to Cub Scout Pack 79! They were all-stars!”
It’s not just the effort to clean up; it’s also the education to be aware of how important the creek is, how trash ends up on the beach and in the ocean.
There is often a low-key contest for the most unusual (or just disgusting) item of trash pulled from the creek; this year, the winner was an upholstered armchair.
Trash is down from last year, but only slightly – the 2024 Clean up pulled 520 pounds of garbage at the same spot on the last Coastal Clean up day.
