July 17, the anniversary of the death of Congressman John Lewis, has been celebrated as a day to make ‘good trouble,’ and hundreds turned out on the sunny afternoon in front of Culver City’s City Hall to do just that.
The protest, which was scheduled for 4:30 to 6 pm, already had people on Culver Blvd. waving signs just after 4 pm. while passing motorists honked in agreement. The crowd grew to an estimated 400 protestors by 5 pm, but careful management by the organizers kept people out of the street so that traffic could move.
The support from the passing traffic was resounding, with not just cars but trucks and busses honking in agreement, and the mood was upbeat throughout. While organizers with megaphones led a sustained chant of “This is what democracy looks like,” a commercial truck waiting for the traffic light at Lafayette to change picked up the rhythm and honked along.
Protest will continue on Saturday mornings from 11 to 12:30; July 26 will be organized by Indivisible.
