Culver City Symphony to Celebrate Mozart’s Birthday on Jan. 21

At the Culver City Symphony’s first concert of 2024,  Clyde Mitchell, the new Music Director-Conductor of the Culver City Symphony Orchestra, returns to the podium to lead the Orchestra as we take a step back into the Classical period to celebrate Mozart’s 268th birthday. The concert, on Sunday Jan. 21, 2024 at 7 pm will take place at the Robert Frost Auditorium, and will feature Mozart’s Magic Flute,

Mozart was undeniably the greatest and most influential composer of the “Classical” period of Western music. The concert features three of his greatest, most familiar, and most loved works: the brilliant and imaginative Overture to The Magic Flute, the sweetly melodic Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major, and his final completed symphony, the majestic “Jupiter” Symphony, No. 41, in C major.

Our flute soloist, Catherine Ransom Karoly, is Associate Principal Flute with the LA Philharmonic. She has featured as a soloist with orchestras including the LA Phil and New World Symphony of Miami Beach, Florida. She has appeared at numerous music festivals, including Marlboro, Tanglewood, and Spoleto (Italy) and, since 1991, at the La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest.

Karoly is Professor of Flute at the renowned Thornton School of Music at USC. She trained at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and at the famed Juilliard School. In addition to hundreds of broadcast and commercial recordings with the LA Phil, she has released an album of flute and piano music titled French Inspirations.

Clyde Mitchell, the Orchestra’s new Music Director-Conductor, was an accomplished French horn player, including as Principal Horn of the Montréal Symphony, before turning to conducting. He was the Resident Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony for nine seasons, and is currently Music Director of the Lions Gate Sinfonia and Youth Orchestra of North Vancouver, Canada. He has been a guest conductor for the Toronto and Montréal Symphonies and other Canadian orchestras as well as numerous engagements in Europe, Asia, South America and the United States. Mitchell now lives in Los Angeles.
