Methusalem, or The Eternal Bourgeois – Actors’ Gang

A talking bear rug leads an animal revolution, an Id and an Ego brawl on stage in competition for Methusalem’s beautiful daughter, and filmed dreams capture Methusalem’s anxiety as his world and empire fall apart.

Methusalem is a brilliant mix of satire, raucous comedy, and surrealist imagery that shocked the theatrical world when it was first presented.

Methusalem was first produced at The Gang in 1985. After the success of last year’s revival of Ubu the King, The Actors’ Gang continues to revisit their punk rock roots by presenting Ivan Goll’s Methusalem or The Eternal Bourgeois, a raucous, visionary German Expressionist play from 1922 that remains shockingly relevant today.

The Actors’ Gang’s original production of Methusalem, directed by Tim Robbins, was performed in 1985. Its success provided inspiration for the years of theatrical madness to follow.

Previews start this Saturday, October 14th and tickets are expected to sell out! SAG/AFTRA members receive half-off tickets at the door with your card!
