CC Democratic Club to Present “Shielded”

The Culver City Democratic Club welcomes UCLA Law Professor Joanna Schwartz as the guest speaker for their May 10 meeting. She will discuss her book Shielded: How the Police Became Untouchable, published by Penguin/Random House in February.

Shielded explains, to a general audience, how the legal system protects police from accountability. It includes clear histories and analyses of qualified immunity, no-knock warrants, and other concepts, as well as personal stories of how families seeking justice and restitution are treated and recommendations and strategies for reform.

Professor Schwartz teaches courses on civil procedure, police accountability, and public interest law at UCLA. Her work has been published and discussed in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and on ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, CNN, and NPR. Her recent appearance on the “Policing and Prison” panel at the LA Times Festival of Books can be streamed from c-span.org. Shielded is currently featured at Village Well Books and Coffee.

This event will be from 7-8PM on Wednesday, May 10, via Zoom. Visit c-c-d-c.com to join the Culver City Democratic Club, the city’s oldest and largest political organization.
