Glickman Wins 2021 Jazz Educator of the Year

At their annual Jazz Tribute Awards, the L.A. Jazz Society recognized the work of the SJO’s music director Mitch Glickman with their 2021 Jazz Educator of the Year Award. Glickman was saluted for his creation of the SJO’s “Music in the Schools” residency program, which serves over 4,000 students every week throughout Los Angeles, his weekly radio broadcast on KJazz 88.1 “Beyond Symphonic Jazz” which gives fresh insights to jazz and jazz history, and to his work as Director of Music Programs at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) where he produces the “Jazz at LACMA” free concert series.

Also awarded at the event was the SJO’s Music Advisory Board member, drummer Peter Erskine, with the 2021 Jazz Tribute Award. In addition to his historic career as a member of Weather Report, the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Steps Ahead and orchestras around the world, Erskine has been a part of the SJO family since its inception 20 years ago. Peter can be heard on the SJO’s recording “Looking Forward, Looking Back,” featured on Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Congrats to Mitch & Peter for their important work in the jazz community.
