As part of the consultant team to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power since 2000 tasked with developing managed-vegetation dust control, Margot Griswold participated as part of the The Habitat Work Group. Can we resume the public involvement in planning the Ballona Wetlands project to bring all interested stakeholders together to respectfully discuss all alternatives for the Ballona Wetlands? Griswold will be the featured speaker on tonight’s Zoom call with the Airport-Marina on ‘The Owens Lake Habitat Work Group: An Example of People Working Together ‘
During the Owens Lake Master Planning process for dust control, several technical committees were formed to develop specific plans. The Habitat Work Group (HWG) was formed by interested stakeholders, including resource agencies, Tribal representatives, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, County of Inyo, nonprofit organizations, the public, and consulting scientists. Together, the HWG developed a Habitat Suitability Model to guide the maintenance of habitat values within the Owens Lake dust control project area, using initial baseline data. The HWG reviewed data together, discussed issues important to each stakeholder respectfully, suggested new studies, and came to consensus on what to protect, where, and the methods to maintain habitat values at Owens Lake while meeting other goals of the dust control project. The HWG continues as an advisory group to the LADWP Master Project.
