Black Talkies on Parade presents the 1954 musical sensation, Carmen Jones Saturday, June 29th @ 2:30 pm. Directed by Otto Preminger, this vibrant film was based on the opera Carmen, but set in the 1940’s Creole South. Featuring an all-star cast including Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, and Dorothy Dandridge as Carmen Jones. Dandridge was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, making her the first African American to be honored in that category. Carmen Jones was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1992 because of its cultural and historical importance in American film history.
The afternoon will be hosted by Executive Director Lloyd Clayton and film committee member Shawnee Gibbs will lead a discussion after the film.
