While no one had their name literally up in lights, their faces were all lit up last weekend, December 5 and 6 at La Ballona Elementary School for the big variety show – La Ballona on Broadway. Students, teachers, friends and parents all got to enjoy some musical theater in the name of a great cause; getting children onstage to express themselves.
Director Darryl Johnson noted that “This program provides a unique opportunity for them to discover talents and desires that are only just starting to take root, and a forum where they can express who they are and what they can do.”
Thanks to the the La Ballona PTA and Booster Club, ample support from Principal Jennifer Slabbinck and the La Ballona staff, there were two nights of Broadway show tunes, singing and dancing from the enthusiastic students. Performances ranged all the way from old classics like “A Bushel and a Peck” from “Guys and Dolls” to “The Nicest Kids in Town” from “Hairspray.” The kids gave some fantastic performances, and it was obvious that some of them truly loved stepping into the limelight.
Johnson also mentioned his thanks to Heather Moses for her administrative work and all other efforts in getting the show up and running.
Wild applause for La Ballona on Broadway, and maybe some of these show tunes will be the first memories of creative performing people with long resumes and vibrant artistic lives. Their names may someday really be up in lights on the Great White Way.
