Everything solid melts: even the ground under your feet runs molten at its core. This Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 2 p.m., the Wende presents Rearranging Rock, a new performance by the musician Maral and her longtime visual collaborator Annapurna Kumar, which seeks to take geologic time and the contents of the earth and turn them into sound and image.
The work pulls from deep time, radical ecology, and sludgecore, built out of recent trips through Southern California, a welding workshop, and long obsessions with the folk art and music of Persia and India.
Maral builds her sound from Iranian classical and folk samples, working across noise, post-punk, and dub. Annapurna Kumar makes animated films and soft sculpture centered on extreme weather, technological skepticism, and human connection. The two artists have collaborated for over fifteen years.
Rearranging Rock is presented as part of FRAMEWORKS, the Wende’s experimental music series.
