The People’s Party to Host Civics Festival – Nov. 1 & 2

When Maximina Juson gets everyone around the table, that table gets big. The local documentary film maker, whose One Person, One Vote? was featured on PBS,  is launching a new organization with a party.

The People’s Party, a groundbreaking festival at the intersection of the arts and civic storytelling, will debut November 1–2, 2025, at the NAACP Hollywood Bureau in Los Angeles.

The nonpartisan, two-day event will open with a welcome address from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, followed by a dynamic lineup of film screenings, interactive workshops, live performances, and games.

“Through my work as a filmmaker, I’ve seen how culture can open doors to critical thinking and civic life,” said Maximina Juson, Executive Director of Civics Is Sexy. “The People’s Party is about creating a space where art, joy, and community invite people—especially young people—into civic engagement.”

At its heart is The People’s Village—a vibrant gathering of civic leaders, artists, comedians, poets, and mission-driven community and media organizations, featuring confirmed voices such as Chris Dowd of Fishbone, comedians Yasmin Elhady and Nic Novicki, DJ Cilla, and DJ ThatFlyPinay—with more exciting names soon to be announced.

Presented by Civics Is Sexy and the NAACP, The People’s Party reimagines civic education as an electrifying cultural experience—designed to cut through disinformation and invite a new generation, along with communities too often left out of traditional civic education, into civic life.

The inaugural festival taking place in Los Angeles convenes a powerful network of partners, including the League of Women Voters LA, Sierra Club, Civic Nation, Students Learn Students Vote, Homeboy Industries, and others. Built on an arts-centered “education-to-action” pipeline, the event fosters not only civic knowledge but also promotes the idea of collective impact.

The People’s Party is offering colleges and universities the opportunity to become Educational Partners by sharing free festival access with their students. This partnership ensures that young people—our most critical generation of future leaders—are welcomed into a space where civic education meets culture, creativity, and community.
