Food Truck Thursday with Santa Maria BBQ – Free Meal /Fundraiser for Backpacks

Another Food Truck Thursday, another popular success; Albert Vera’s generous habit of hosting a food truck at the school complex on Thursday evenings is a two-fold win. It’s an offer of a free meal to anyone who needs one, and for those who can pay, it’s a way to refill the grocery budget for CCUSD’s Backpacks for Kids program.

May 21, 2020 was a marquee moment for Culver City’s iconic Santa Maria BBQ, who turned out 570 meals in less than two hours. The long line only came to an end only when the cupboard was empty. BBQ Chicken, potato salad, green salad and bread all went home with masked community members, grateful for the chance to get out and say hello from a distance.

LA City Council member Herb Wesson was also on hand, giving away industrial sized boxes of cake mix and cans of strawberry frosting for a DIY dessert course.

The need for food support in the community is increasing as the pandemic affects the local economy, and the Backpacks program is one of many ways that help is available.

Sorrento’s Market will continue hosting Thursday evening food trucks; get in line early, pay what you can, and know that any donation will assist to keeping everyone fed.
