Coastal Clean-Up at Four Locations in Culver City – Save the Date

Culver City residents are invited to participate in the world’s largest volunteer day to protect our oceans and local waterways, Coastal Cleanup Day, from 9 AM to Noon on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Culver City residents can register on the official Eventbrite page to become a volunteer or visit the the sites listed below. Waivers will be available at each site. For participants under the age of 18, parental consent is required.

“For over 20 years, the City of Culver City has participated in the annual Coastal Cleanup Day. We’re proud to continue this tradition to beautify and preserve our environment for the wildlife that also calls Culver City ‘home,’” said Culver City Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells. “It also serves to spread awareness about pollution and steps we can all take to reduce single-use products in our daily lives to keep our city, our creek and our ocean plastic-free and trash-free. The City is thrilled to collaborate with the group spearheading this initiative, Heal the Bay, along with all of the other agencies that are making environmental conservation a part of life for all of Southern California.”

Culver City along with thousands of other communities around the world will reduce pollution by sprucing up their local waterways, beaches and neighborhood parks. In Los Angeles County alone, there will be more than 70 cleanup sites, four of which will be along the Ballona Creek Bike Path at the following locations:

Syd Kronenthal Park (3451 McManus Avenue)
Duquesne Avenue (4339 Duquesne Avenue)
Overland Avenue (4990 Overland Avenue)
Sepulveda Boulevard (5000 Sepulveda Boulevard)

All cleanup locations will have cleaning supplies, though volunteers are encouraged to bring their own buckets, gloves and refillable water bottles to help reduce waste. To prepare, volunteers can check out the various types of trash they may find on their Coastal Cleanup Day excursions.

In collaboration with the City of Culver City, California Coastal Commission and the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors, Heal the Bay organizes Coastal Cleanup Day annually. This year’s event marks Heal the Bay’s 35th anniversary of coordinating California’s Coastal Cleanup Day. To celebrate, Heal the Bay created a Cleanup Story Map that reflects on past volunteer accomplishments. In 2018 alone, 13,464 volunteers removed 59,600 pounds of trash from L.A. County within a three-hour time span. Across California, 66,535 volunteers removed 839,629 pounds of debris; and worldwide, 789,138 volunteers removed 20 million pounds of trash and debris.

Culver City’s Coastal Cleanup Day 2019 is made possible by sponsors, including the Culver City Public Works Environmental Programs and Operations Division, Ballona Creek Renaissance, Echo Horizon School, Kiwanis Club of Los Angeles, Bike Culver City, Heal the Bay and the Sierra Club’s West Los Angeles Group.
