L.A. Controller & Council Launch Clothing Drive to Empower Women

L.A. Controller Ron Galperin and the L.A. City Council have launched the Women’s Professional Clothing drive. From now until Oct. 26, the City will be collecting thousands of pairs of dresses, shoes, accessories and other lightly worn items to benefit nonprofit organizations Dress for Success and Girls Today Women Tomorrow. A list of 23 locations throughout Los Angeles where Angelenos can donate, and more information is available at bit.ly/laclothing.

With Controller Galperin, the clothing drive is produced in large part by the offices of Councilmembers Jose Huizar, Nury Martinez and Monica Rodriguez. Bins are being provided by L.A. Sanitation and Environment.

Girls Today Women Tomorrow prepares young women for higher education and career success through educational enrichment activities and mentoring. Dress for Success is dedicated to empowering women by helping to create solutions of self-sustainability. Besides physically equipping their clients with apparel and accessories for job interviews, Dress for Success offers a range of programs that focus on financial literacy, leadership and civic participation free of charge.

“As Controller, I work each day to outfit our City with a high degree of transparency and accountability,” said L.A. Controller Ron Galperin, who last year collected more than 2,500 clothing items for homeless LGBTQ youth. “While it’s vitally important to ensure we have a well-run City, we also must ensure opportunity is within reach. Professional attire can change a life and I would ask that all my fellow Angelenos dig through their closets to make an impact today.”

“Everyone deserves the opportunity to lead successful lives,” said Councilmember José Huizar. “This donation drive is about ensuring that girls and women who might not have the economic means, but do have the desire and determination to live better lives are able to confidently pursue their dreams. I want to thank Controller Galperin and Councilmembers Martinez and Rodriguez for joining us in this worthy effort to uplift the women in our communities.”

“I am proud to partner with L.A. Controller Ron Galperin, Councilmembers Huizar and Rodriguez, and the Department of Sanitation in hosting this year’s professional women’s clothing drive.” Councilwoman Nury Martinez said. “I believe every young woman deserves a chance to succeed, and this drive would help further their pathway to success.”

“Looking your best and feeling your best is empowering. I’m proud to be part of this effort to help women dress for success,” Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez said.

“For the past 22 years Girls Today Women Tomorrow has been changing lives of young Latinas in Boyle Heights,” said Board of Directors Officer Cynthia Ruiz from Girls Today Women Tomorrow. “We are grateful for all of the support we have received, we would especially like to thank our elected officials for their commitment to developing the next generation of leaders.”
