MCLM Black Talkies – Purlie Victorius

Black Talkies on Parade presents the 1963 comedy Purlie Victorious. Directed by Nicholas Webster and written by Ossie Davis, the movie stars legendary couple, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, and features supporting performances from Godfrey Cambridge and Alan Alda. This film is based on the 1961 Tony Award winning play of the same name and was also later turned into a musical. Set in the 1930’s Jim Crow south, Davis plays Victorious Judson who has returned to Cotchipee Country, Georgia to retrieve an inheritance promised to his deceased cousin, Bea. Bea bears a striking resemblance to Ruby Dee’s character, Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, who poses as Bea in order to retrieve the inheritance. Davis and Dee steal the show with clever dialogue that will keep you laughing throughout the film. Runtime of Purlie Victorious is 99min.

The afternoon will be hosted by Executive Director Lloyd Clayton and film committee member Shawnee Gibbs will lead a post screening discussion.
