Walk ‘n Roll Challenge – June 18

b839d6fb-3446-4a1d-9c95-066f51386c26Walk ’n Rollers presents the Walk ‘n Roll Challenge, a fun, family-friendly event that challenges kids and adults to walk, run or bike as many laps as they can while raising funds to support Walk ’n Rollers’ programs. Runners and cyclists will have 30 minutes to see how many laps they can complete. Walkers will have two hours for their laps. Participants can enter as many categories as they like and earn prizes for their efforts.

The Walk ’n Roll Challenge will also feature a Kids Zone, A Skate Demo, Tricycle Derby and Raffle. A minimum donation of $25 is all it takes to get started, but participants can also gather sponsors and win extra prizes for most laps in each category, most sponsors or top dollars raised.

”The Walk ’n Roll Challenge is like a mash up of a Fun Run and Jog-a-thon in a festival atmosphere” explains Walk ’n Rollers’ founder Jim Shanman. “30 minutes is how long walking ½ mile to and from school should take, so the Walk ’n Roll Challenge also calls attention to how easy that would be”.

By challenging kids to complete as many laps as possible, the emphasis is on the effort. Whether they run one lap or 20, they’ll have fun knowing they did their best. The laps they walk, run or bike support Walk ’n Rollers’ efforts to help more kids be more active more often more safely.

Walk ’n Rollers encourages kids to walk, bike, skate and scoot to school more often. They help schools throughout LA County establish walk-bike to school programs and host community safety events like Kids Bike Skills Workshops and Walk & Roll Festivals.

The event also creates awareness for the need to get more kids more active. In 1970 nearly half of school-aged children walked or biked to school and today it’s only 15%. Obesity rates inchildren continue to rise and increased traffic around schools has created unsafe and unhealthy conditions for our school-age children. Too many kids are driven to school every day depriving them of important morning activity and creating too much congestion and pollution around schools. Our programs – such as the 5 block Challenge – create awareness and provide simple solutions to these issues as well as education so kids learn to walk and bike to school safely.
