Students + Backpacks = Community

b1960272-cbb4-4f60-aca7-104931d68cb4The 5th graders at The Willows should be very proud of themselves. On Tuesday May 31, 2016, Willows’ students came to visit our food pantry at the Middle School. They did not come empty handed. Bag, after bag, after bag of donated food, helping to fill our food pantry shelves. The students were cheerful, polite, and wonderfully helpful. They sorted food and packed it into containers. Insightful questions kept our Backpacks volunteers Jamie and Bob Wallace, and David Stout on their toes.
The Willows, a private school located in the Hayden Tract in Culver City, allows the 5th grader students to develop and plan a Fifth Grade Project. This year they decided to take on food uncertainty and for the second year in a row, chose the Culver City Schools Backpacks for Kids Program.
The student enthusiasm was infectious. Willows teachers and volunteers Kenzo Bergeron, Rebecca Drago, Taylor Stacey, Alexandra Wolfe, and Abigail Myers ably arranged all of the logistics and cheered the students on.
Backpacks is a program reliant entirely on donations and community assistance. Weekend food packing will resume in the fall. On behalf of the CCUSD students, we thank our friends at The Willows and look forward to working with them again in the future.
