Westside Repair Cafe – April 30

WRC-Regional-LogoWebWestside Repair Café is a volunteer-run community service dedicated to encouraging the repair and reuse of goods rather than relegating them to landfills. Saturday , April 30, 2016 from 2 to 5 pm at Marine Park in Santa Monica, 1406 Marine St.

Consider this: In 1960, each person in the US generated 2.68 pounds of waste per day. According to the EPA website, in 2013, Americans generated about 254 million tons of trash and recycled and composted about 87 million tons. On average, we recycled and composted 1.51 pounds of our individual waste of 4.40 pounds per person per day.

The first Repair Café was started in Amsterdam in 2009. Since then, over 30 Repair Cafés have sprouted up in Europe. Others are forming elsewhere around the world.

How it works: Bring something to be repaired, like a small appliance, some clothing, a bicycle, etc. Sign a waiver and fill out a repair ticket. A volunteer will try to find the problem and fix it. You can sip some tea and meet other folks while you wait for your turn. To speed up the process, fill out and submit a repair ticket online www.smgov.net/Departments/PublicWorks/R3Form.aspx?ekfrm=53153 .

Other Repair Cafe activities: Bring a dish to share for the Pot Luck; bring clothes that are in good condition for the Clothing Swap; bring give-away items for the Free Table; participate in a Tai Chi demonstration. Sometimes we have volunteer musicians who keep the event lively…maybe you are one!
