Repair Cafe This Saturday – Fix, Swap, Meet and Learn

IMG_5351If its broke, fix it! Join Transition Culver City, Our Time Bank, USAgain, and Culver City and City of Santa Monica Resource Recovery and Recycling Division of Public Works for the Summer 2015 Regional Westside Repair Cafe. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 1 pm- 5 pm. 1406 Marine St. Santa Monica

Learn how to fix common household items. Experienced volunteers, known as “Fixers” will be there to offer their expertise.

AND Its a pot luck! Bring a dish or snack for 8-10 people to share. This is a zero waste event so please bring a plate, cup and cutlery for yourself.

New this time: Clothing Swap! In addition to our usual Give-Away area, we add a clothing swap where folks can bring clothes in excellent condition to exchange for clothes in the same condition, but perhaps a better fit and more to one’s liking. Perhaps you may want help altering your new garment at the wardrobe station.

What to bring: Expertise will vary event to event, but most likely our volunteers will be able to diagnose and do work on:

Small household appliances like toasters, hair dryers, mixers, vacuums, etc.
Various electronics including computers, games, tools, audio/video, and other devices
Toys, furniture, lamps, kitchen items, fixtures, minor woodworking
Bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, scooters, skates
Clothing, shoes, luggage
Blade sharpening
Small plumbing items like faucets, valves, hoses, sprinklers
Most items suitable for general handyman types of repairs
If its too big to carry in, bring a picture and/or describe the problem to us. We will make suggestions.

For larger items, there’s a drop-off area in front of the building. Please come to the front desk
for assistance. Do not drop off any item without first checking in.

What to expect: Of course, there is no guarantee you’ll walk out with a workable item. We may not be staffed with the right skills or equipment; it may take some time to research and/or find repair parts, or it may just not be feasible or cost effective to repair your item. But we would give it a shot. If we can’t fix it, we may recommend local repair shops.

For this edition of Repair Cafe we have some marvelous partners. Please take a moment to read about a couple of them and visit their links:

Our Time Bank’s mission is to nurture and expand a movement that promotes equality and builds caring community economies through inclusive exchange of time and talent. USAgain reduces the negative impacts of clothes and shoes on our environment by increasing their reuse and recycling. USAgain (pronounce Use Again) gives a new life to discarded clothing by putting them back in the use stream as second hand clothing. Clothes that are not in condition to be re-worn are shredded to make new material like insulation for homes and the car industry or to reclaim fiber to make new fabric. www.usagain.com
