This Saturday night, June 14, marks the Culver City Symphony Orchestra’s final concert of the season at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, 9820 Washington Blvd. at Duquesne, at 7:30 p.m. There is a post-concert reception for ticket holders and a raffle drawing (no pre-concert talk at this concert). On the program is Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City” (1939); Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” (1947) featuring Lori Stinson, Soprano; Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin” (1917-1919); and Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 99” (1793). What better way to start summer and celebrate the longest day of the year (Saturday, June 21st) than participate in a cleanup of Ballona Creek? It’s going to be a Summer Solstice celebration from 9:00 a.m. – noon, meeting at Centinela Ave. at the Ballona Creek Bike Path Entrance between Culver Blvd. and the Marina Freeway (I-90). Volunteers of all ages are welcome for this fun and worthwhile activity (waivers required for adults and participants under 18, available onsite or online at www.ballonacreek.org.) It’s suggested that you bring your own water in a reusable container – extra water will also be available at the event. Wear closed-toed shoes, cap and sunscreen and either bring your own gear or bags, buckets, grabbers, gloves and other tools will be available for use. NOTE: they’ve vowed not to produce more trash than they’re picking up! Everything collected will be sorted then weighed: the last cleanup in April saw trash amount to 706 pounds and 153 pounds of recyclables – a total of 869 pounds diverted from reaching the Pacific! Let’s see what the totals are this time!

The Culver City Rotary Club will be presenting an “Honoring Our Veterans Event” chaired by Joel Forman on – most appropriately – Flag Day, June 14, 2014, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall 5300 South Sepulveda Blvd. Rotarian veterans, families and friends are invited to a special day in honoring all branches of military service.
